We aim for time spent at Hospitalfield to act as a step change in the evolution of an artist’s work.
The residency programme at Hospitalfield provides opportunities for visual artists, filmmakers, writers and other cultural practitioners to focus on the development of a specific idea, project or the development of new work.
It is a context in which participants can work independently or collaboratively. Selectors are looking for applicants that can demonstrate clearly what their project or focus for the residency will be.
Please note that currently:-
- The funded residency programmes are devised for those developing their working lives within the scope of contemporary visual art practice.
- The Interdisciplinary Programme is a programme that welcomes applications from a wide range of cultural practitioners.
- The Graduate programme invites applications from art courses.
- We work with partners to devise and run other specialist residency programmes throughout the year.
Applications are invited from artists who have a specific project or period of work to focus on and for whom this time will be invaluable. We expect that applicants will have had a formal training or similar and will be developing projects and new work for public exhibition or developing their research with some form of future public outcome in mind. The programmes are structured for individuals working at a range of points in their career. Each has a specific focus, the Interdisciplinary Programme for example aiming to cultivate a group which has the broadest range of practices. Selectors will consider the application statements with care and in accordance with the aims of each of the programmes. We do not expect to do interviews so will select from the applications.
Participants in the programme live and work in the house, studios, gardens and courtyards of the estate. The location overlooking the North Sea gives a feeling of isolation and is an extremely peaceful place to work however, once off the threshold of the estate the reality is that Hospitalfield is a part of the small fishing town of Arbroath and within walking distance of useful amenities. Arbroath station is on the east coast train line running from London to Aberdeen and the direct trains to all of the main Scottish cities. The long daylight hours in the spring and summer, beautiful coast line and high percentage of sunshine hours defines this part of Scotland.
Selectors for the residency programmes at Hospitalfield are looking for applicants that can demonstrate clearly what their project or focus for the residency is and what they anticipate the potential that this setting will offer them and the progression of their work.

In Spring 2024, Hospitalfield completed major restoration and renovation work of the purpose built artist studios.
In May and June of 2024, we are inviting practitioners in the DD area to be some of the earliest users of our studio spaces, to test out ideas, think big or dedicate a few days to a specific project with the support of Hospitalfield. Practitioners could be artists, illustrators, designers, musicians, choreographers, singers, writers.
Our studios consist of 19th, 20th and 21st century spaces:
The Patrick Allan Fraser Studio was built in 1860 and is the first artist studio to be built on the site. This studio is suited to painting and drawing practices but could also support movement, sound and solo working.
The 1901 studios are two large purpose built studios with north facing light. They are suited to drawing, painting, clay, plaster, collage as well as research and reading. They are shared studios spaces and usually host 2-3 artists at a time.
The 21st century studio building was completed in 2024 and is a purpose built facility with moving image, sound and image making practices in mind. The building is home to three studios: a screening room / shared studio space, a small wet dark room and acoustic solo use studio.

Our studios are offered on a facility online basis and we anticipate that artists will bring the equipment that they require in order to undertake their work. We have very basic items available as Hospitalfield - if you have any questions, please email cicely@hospitalfield.org.uk in advance of putting in your note of interest.
The offer:
- Artists and practitioners based in the DD postcode area are given free access to work in the studios for up to 4 days in May or June 2024.
- Support from Hospitalfield's programme team
- Optional events with other participants of the studio residencies
Notes of Interest:
- We are inviting notes of interest. Please submit your request as soon as possible.
- We are keen to see proposals for work where the artists practice can really benefit from the facilities we hold here at Hospitalfield.
- We will invite you to participate in evaluation about the studio spaces after you have complete your use of the spaces.
Access:
The studio spaces are level access. It is possible to park exactly outside the studios if you have access requirements in accessible studio parking spaces.
This is a 'free' opportunity for artists and practitioners in the DD region. We are unable to provide financial support to make participation possible however can provide letters of support if it is possible to gain funding prior to the studio access.

This is a non-residential offer and does not include accommodation or meals at Hospitalfield.
This offer does not include daily access to the House but we can arrange tours.
It is not possible to host events as part of this studio use.
We discourage site specific projects during this short period of time.
