Introduction: The DD Studio Time Residency offers non-residential use of Hospitalfield studios for Practitioners living in the DD post code area. We know that those living in this area don’t necessarily need residential accommodation at Hospitalfield but the use of the studios for the development of their work is invaluable. With this in mind, we are relaunching the DD Studio Time Residency. The last time we offered this we got to know lots of amazing people who work across the region. About The Residency: 

In October 2026 we are inviting practitioners who live in the DD post code area to spend up to 8 days of studio only residency time in the Hospitalfield Studios. This time can be used to test out ideas, think and make big, or dedicate a few days to a specific project with the support of Hospitalfield. Practitioners applying for these residencies could be artists, illustrators, designers, musicians, choreographers, singers, writers, dancers and those working within the arts or culture at large. Whilst the offer of The DD Studio Time Residency is aimed at individuals or small collaborative groups of artists, we aim to host multiple artists onsite at any given time during the residency period. We hope that this will give practitioners access to a new community of artists to form connections with. To aid this there will be optional group programming that residents can participate in including end of residency presentations and a celebratory meal.

Available Spaces: Our studios consist of 20th and 21st century spaces. The 1901, built for the original art college, are large purpose-built studios with north facing light, originally design for painting but they are wonderful workspaces for any practice. They are shared studios spaces and usually host 2-3 artists at a time. 

Our new studio, completed in 2024, is a purpose-built facility with moving image, sound and image making practices in mind. The building is home to two studios: a screening room with cinema grade projector and surround sound speakers, a small wet dark room and an acoustic solo studio that is well insulated for sound. 

The Kinpurnie Print Studio is set up with ‘safe’ printing processes – saline sulphate etching, it also has a pinch press and large troft sink. We also have two spaces that are ideal for writers or researchers, the Reading Nook in the 1901 studios and our New Scriptoirum bothy.

Our studios are offered on a facility only basis and we anticipate that artists will bring the equipment and materials that they require to undertake their work. If you are applying to use a facility such as the print studio or dark room you must be self-sufficient in working in these spaces from set up to clean down, there are no technicians on site.

What the offer is: 

·  Artists and practitioners must be based in the DD postcode area are given free Support from Hospitalfield's programme team

·  Practitioners can request up to 8 days of access to work in the studios from withing the following dates: 28th September – 1st October and 7th – 30th of October

·  Practitioners will have access to the studios from 8am to 9pm 

·  Practitioners will be invited to optional events with other participants of the studio residencies

What the offer is not:

·  These residencies are non-residential meaning that whilst you will have access to the studio space this offer does not include accommodation or meals at Hospitalfield. (The Garden Café is open Thursday to Sunday 10-4 and there is access to the Artist’s Kitchen during 9-5 to make your own food)

·  This offer does not include daily access to the House, but we can arrange tours. 

·  It is not possible to host events as part of this studio use. 

·  We discourage site specific projects during this short period of time.

Application Tips: 

• We are keen to see proposals for work where the artists practice can really benefit from the facilities or spaces, we hold here at Hospitalfield. 
• We will invite you to participate in evaluation about the studio spaces after you have complete your use of the spaces. 
• Please note the length of time and type of space requested on your application form.

Access: 

This is a 'free' opportunity for artists and practitioners in the DD region. We are unable to provide financial support if you need additional funds for travel, other access costs or materials to make participation possible. We can provide letters of support if you seek funding for the studio access. The studio spaces are level access. It is possible to park exactly outside the studios if you have access requirements in accessible studio parking spaces, there are accessible bathrooms in both studio buildings, you can note any access needs on the application form. 

About the Guest Selector: Pernille Spence is an artist based in Scotland who has been creating performances and moving image works since the mid 1990s.  She has created work for the sky, working with a team of skydivers, been lifted into the air by 22 giant weather balloons and devised a series of performances that took place in over 50 locations in the landscape alongside railway lines from Aberdeen to Glasgow.  Since 2015 Pernille has been making work in collaboration with artist, Zoë Irvine as Irvine & Spence. Exhibiting nationally and internationally her work has been shown in many galleries and festivals including the National Review of Live Art, Glasgow, the Edith-Russ-Haus for Media Art, Germany, the Australian Centre for Moving Image, Melbourne and was part of “>>FFWD:Artists’ Moving Image from Scotland” in Shanghai Minsheng Art Museum, Shanghai Biennale, China.  Works made in collaboration with Zoë Irvine have been shown in film festivals such as Alchemy Film and Moving Image Festival, the Aesthetica Short film festival and the Ann Arbor Film Festival where they were awarded the Prix De Varti in 2024. Pernille is currently Head of Art in the Contemporary Art Practice department at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design, University of Dundee. About Hospitalfield: Dedicated to contemporary art and ideas, Hospitalfield has an international reputation in the visual arts for our artist development programmes through residencies and commissioning. Over the last ten years our programmes have given time and space to artists to develop new work at a pivotal time in the development of their careers.

Participants in the programme use the facilities on site as detailed for each programme that we run. The location, overlooking the North Sea, provides an extremely peaceful place to work. Hospitalfield is situated on the edge of the small town of Arbroath, once off the threshold of the estate you are within walking distance of useful amenities and the beach. Arbroath station is on the east coast train line from London to Aberdeen and is linked to all of the main Scottish towns and cities by train and buses. The long daylight hours in the spring and summer, beautiful coastline and high percentage of sunshine hours defines this part of Scotland.
